William Henry Fox Talbot Collection. [ca. 1830]-1977 (bulk 1840s).

The collection contains original prints and paper negatives produced by Talbot, as well as two modern photograms made for the Royal Photographic Historical Society using Talbot's methods during the centenary year of his death, 1977. There are also several "photoglyphic" engravings issued to accompany the "Photographic News." Views of Talbot's favorite subject, Lacock Abbey, are predominant, but other subjects include: Melrose Abbey; Abbotsford (home of Sir Walter Scott) and Scott's tomb in Dryburgh Abbey (Scotland); views of Scotland's Loch Katrine, and other miscellaneous landscapes; prominent cathedrals, churches, and other buildings in Paris, Orleans, and Vienne (France), Oxford and York (England), and Edinburgh (Scotland); street scenes in Swansea (Wales), London, and Paris; bridges in Bath and Cambridge (England), Paris and Orleans (France), and Prague (Czech Republic); the Castle of Doune (Scotland); the Kremlin's broken bell (Moscow, Russia); still life compositions with leaves, china, glass, or fabrics and lace; views of a bust sculpture of Greek mythological figure, Patroclus; men playing chess; sailors on deck of a warship; portrait of the Rev. Calvert Jones; a view of Java (Jawa Timur, Indonesia); reproduction of an ordnance map; scene in a library; and various interiors, country houses, and the like.

Photographic inventor and polymath William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) was descended on his mother's side from the earls of Ilchester, Somerset. His father, an infantry captain, died when he was a baby, leaving him Lacock Abbey estate in Wiltshire, along with enormous debts.
